Before learning about the different eras and approaches to leadership from this week’s lecture, my definition of leadership has also been when a person uses their leadership skills to direct and influence others within the team or group to reach their common goals. According to Northouse (2019), this approach to leadership is known as transformational. What separates a transformational leader from the other types of leaders is their ability to use charisma, which is an important soft skill to have if one wants to direct and supervise a team. A person who is charismatic is dominate but compassionate, confident while also being transparent.
But what makes a transformational leader an effective leader is that they are competent, have high expectations, and have a desire to direct others to reach their goals. In return, there is increased affection towards the leader, growing confidence in the group, and higher morale within the workplace. To add to my original definition, leadership is when an effective leader uses charisma, such as dominance and compassion, to direct and influence other within their team or group to reach their goals while holding high expectations for everyone including themselves.
